Ken Doll 1st Edition was produced in early March 1961, and he was introduced to the world as Barbie's boyfriend. The 1st Ken doll had a nice "boy next-door" face with blue eyes and short flocked hair, usually in the hair colors of blonde, brown or brunette. Barbie was truly smitten with Ken from the moment they met!
He is dressed in red swimming trunks with a white strip on each side of the thigh. He comes packaged in a white box with pictures of barbie and ken fashions printed on

Barbie Doll 5th Edition
//
Barbie Doll 5th Edition exploded onto the toy market in 1961, still manufactured as # 850, or Barbie 5 to collectors. There were two dolls released, the beautiful Ponytail Barbie and the new stunning Bubble-cut (hairstyle) Barbie. The two dolls are identical in looks, have the same black and white bathing suit, white rimmed sunglasses, black shoes and pearl stud earrings. The dolls also have red nail and toe polish which looks stunning and just finishes off the dolls look.

Barbie Doll 4th Edition
//
Barbie Doll 4th Edition still comes under the code of #850, but to her devoted fans she is Barbie number 4. This doll was still manufactured with her black and white bathing suit, ponytail with curly fringe. Her new revised make-up was also retained.
This gorgeous doll has lovely red nail polish and toe polish to top off her designer look!
The most notable change with this doll was the plastic/vinyl that was used. The first 3 editions manufactured in 1959-1960 sometimes had

Barbie Doll 3rd Edition
//
Barbie Doll 3rd Edition was released early in 1960, still with the manufacture code of # 850, but known to collectors as Barbie number 3. This version of Barbie was manufactured with a softer, toned down look...... Many described the first 2 versions of the doll (in 1959) as being a bit too sophisticated for young girls.
This did not discourage the general public sales of beautiful Barbie as she continued to climb the top sales ladders and adult doll collectors were also

Barbie Doll 2nd Edition
//
Barbie Doll 2nd Edition was released late in the year 1959 and was nearly identical to the Number 1 Barbie Doll, but with the now noticeable omission of the copper tubing in her feet. A new and much less expensive (than putting copper tubing in her feet) doll stand was designed and manufactured by Mattel. This new stand would hold Barbie upright and support her under the arms, this also looked much better with the doll in place.
This doll is known to collectors as the number 2

Number 1 Barbie Doll
//
Number 1 Barbie Doll (as she is affectionately known to collectors by) came out on the 10th of March 1959 and now that very doll, manufactured as doll # 850, is extremely hard to find today, but not impossible. Rarely but occasionally they do come up for sale, usually from a collector selling off their collection or from an estate sale.
To find her in mint condition still in her original doll box today, for most of us, is elusive...... The best way to make # 850 doll yours in mint

Barbie Doll Collecting
//
In 1959 no-one could envisage how the humble little blonde doll known as Barbie would ( in the next few years) explode into the wonderful world of Barbie Doll Collecting. Today, she is indeed an icon and we have the great company of Mattel to thank for many wonderful years of Barbie....
In 2009 she celebrated her 50th birthday and a great range of beautiful reproduction dolls were released, including reproductions of the much loved early editions from the 1960's.
